Overview

Style guides are widely used by business and academic entities and are a fundamental tool for anyone that writes any type of document. While all entities that issue style guides have unique elements specific to their business requirements, there are a number of common writing conventions that underpin all written documents. This course is designed to introduce writers to the technical aspects of a style guide as well as the common writing conventions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the role of, and apply, a style guide to any writing
  • Use common conventions to draft and edit writing for a range of documents
  • Understand the difference between a formal graphic-based document and a standard business or academic document and when to apply different rules

Instructors

Dr Linda Glassop has been involved in Higher Education thirty years lecturing for eleven Australian Universities. Linda has written extensively in both academic work (thesis, journal articles, research reports) and for business (books, consulting reports). Linda has supervised over forty Executive MBA students, and taught postgraduate and undergraduate students. Prior to her academic career, Linda spent twenty years in industry working internationally with multi-national corporations in a variety of areas: solutions architect, change agent, operations management, process reengineering, information systems design, quality management and accountant. Originally trained as an Accountant, Linda has completed a MBA (Macq.), a Grad.Cert. H.Ed. (UNSW), a Master of Philosophy (ANU) and a Ph.D. (Deakin).

Dr Eliani Boton has over twenty-six years working in the Education sector. She started her career in her home country (Brazil) teaching English and Spanish to speakers of other languages (TESOL & TSSOL teacher). After migrating to Australia in 1994, she held various training and management roles within universities and vocational colleges. Her areas of expertise include online course design & delivery, as well as the integration of pedagogical strategies for high student engagement and retention. Eliani holds a Bachelor of Education (UNESP, Brazil), a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAFE), a Graduate Diploma in eLearning (UNE) and a PhD in Education (UNE).
